Step Two: Starting

Where to start and how to sow?

  • Transplant (recommended) - Sow indoors 4 weeks before planting out. Cover seeds. A heat mat will help maintain an accurate temperature. Lower temperatures will result in slower germination: 5-7 days at 70-75°F (21-24°C).
  • Direct seed outside - Sow 1/4" deep. Thin plants to about 10" apart.

Step Three: Growing

How to keep happy?

  • At planting, blend a balanced fertilizer containing equal parts nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium into the soil.
  • Following planting, apply a monthly fertilizer rich in phosphorus over nitrogen to stimulate fresh blooms in zinnias.

Zinnia

Zinnias boast lush, fully double blooms reminiscent of dahlias, adorning vases with their enduring beauty. Thriving in scorching summer sun and rain, they defy powdery mildew with ease. Their resilience to heat, drought, and diseases paints them as champions of adversity. As cut-and-come-again flowers, they grace your garden with bountiful blooms. With a siren call for butterflies, zinnias adorn butterfly gardens, weaving a tapestry of color that supports the fluttering majesty of these creatures through their lifecycle.
