Garlic is a hardy, bulb-forming perennial most often grown as an annual in home gardens. Known for its pungent flavor and aroma, garlic is a staple in global cuisine and has been used medicinally for thousands of years. Its robust growth habit, pest-deterring properties, and ability to enhance the flavor of nearly any savory dish make it an essential addition to the vegetable garden.

Though garlic is most commonly propagated from individual cloves, it can also be grown from seed—though this is more complex and time-consuming. While growing it from true seed is possible, planting from cloves remains the most practical and rewarding method. Whether you're a beginner gardener or an experienced grower, adding garlic to your garden offers a reliable harvest, natural pest resistance, and a bold flavor that enhances almost any meal. With a bit of planning and patience, you can enjoy homegrown garlic year after year.

Why Shido Seeds Are the Best

To get the biggest bulbs, plant the largest cloves and remove flower scapes early. Rotate garlic to a new location each year to prevent soil-borne diseases and improve yield.

Getting to know your Garlic

Garlic plants develop a basal cluster of narrow, grass-like leaves that arise from a central stem. Underground, the plant forms a bulb made up of multiple cloves, each capable of becoming a new plant. Garlic sends up a leafy stalk, and some types (called hardneck garlic) produce a flowering stalk or "scape" that curls before opening.

Depending on the variety, garlic plants may mature in 7–9 months and produce anywhere from 4 to 20 cloves per bulb. Garlic also has natural pest-deterring compounds, making it a helpful companion plant.
