Scallions, also known as green onions, bunching onions, or spring onions, belong to the Allium family alongside garlic, onions, and leeks. They are cultivated primarily for their mild-flavored leaves and tender white stalks, which are used in numerous culinary dishes worldwide. Unlike bulb onions, scallions do not form a large bulb, making them a versatile and quick-growing crop. Scallions are a fast-growing, versatile vegetable that is easy to cultivate. With proper soil preparation, consistent watering, and regular harvesting, home gardeners can enjoy a continuous supply of fresh green onions. Whether used raw or cooked, scallions remain a staple in culinary gardens and provide both flavor and nutrition to a variety of dishes.

How to Plant Scallions from Seed

When to Plant Seeds

  • Spring Planting: Sow seeds 4-6 weeks before the last frost date.
  • Fall Planting: Sow seeds 8-10 weeks before the first frost for a late-season harvest.
  • In mild climates, scallions can be grown year-round.

Preparing for Planting

  1. Select a sunny to partially shaded site.
  2. Loosen soil to a depth of 6-8 inches and mix in organic compost.
  3. Ensure good drainage, as scallions do not tolerate waterlogged soil.

Sowing Seeds

  1. Plant seeds ¼ inch deep and ½ inch apart in rows 12 inches apart.
  2. Water lightly after sowing and keep soil evenly moist.
  3. Germination occurs in 7-14 days, depending on temperature.

Thinning Seedlings

  • Once seedlings reach 2-3 inches tall, thin them to 2 inches apart.
  • Use thinned seedlings as microgreens or early green onions.

Pro Tip

Scallions are a cut-and-come-again crop! Harvest the green tops and leave the white base in the soil—it will regrow for multiple harvests. Keep the soil moist and fertilize lightly for the best flavor.

Bonus: You can also regrow them from store-bought scallions by placing the roots in water!

Getting to know your Scallions

Scallions, also known as green onions, are a perennial onion variety grown for their mild, slender stalks. They thrive in well-drained soil and full sun, reaching maturity in 50-60 days. Scallions can be harvested continuously by cutting the greens, allowing regrowth. They are used raw in salads, soups, and garnishes.

What it's used for

1. Culinary Uses:

  • Scallions are mild and versatile, used both raw and cooked.
  • Commonly added to salads, stir-fries, soups, omelets, and garnishes.
  • The white stalks have a stronger onion flavor, while the green tops are milder.

2. Nutritional Benefits:

  • High in vitamins A, C, and K, as well as fiber, antioxidants, and sulfur compounds.
  • Aids in digestion, immune support, and heart health.
  • Low in calories, making them a healthy addition to any diet.

3. Companion Planting:

  • Scallions repel pests like aphids and carrot flies.
  • They grow well with carrots, lettuce, tomatoes, and herbs.
  • Avoid planting with beans and peas, as onions can inhibit their growth.
Growth Requirements

Light:

  • Prefer full sun to partial shade.
  • At least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for optimal growth.

Soil:

  • Requires well-draining, fertile soil with a pH of 6.0-7.0.
  • Adding organic compost or aged manure improves soil quality.

Watering:

  • Keep soil evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging.
  • Water deeply once or twice a week, depending on weather conditions.

Temperature & Climate:

  • Ideal growing temperature: 55-75°F (13-24°C).
  • Can tolerate light frosts, but extreme cold or heat may affect growth.

Fertilization:

  • Use a balanced fertilizer (10-10-10) or organic compost.
  • Apply a nitrogen-rich fertilizer every 3-4 weeks for continuous leaf production.
Maintenance

Mulching:

  • Apply a thin layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Pruning & Harvesting:

  • Cut outer leaves first to allow continuous growth.
  • Harvest scallions 60-80 days after planting, or sooner for younger greens.

Bolting Prevention:

  • Avoid high temperatures to prevent premature flowering.
  • Water consistently and provide shade during hot periods.

Refrigeration:

  • Store fresh scallions wrapped in a damp paper towel in a plastic bag for up to a week.

Our Seed Quality Guarantee

At Shido, we believe great gardens start with great seeds — and that means quality comes first. Every seed lot we offer is ensure to generate top-notch germination because your garden deserves nothing less.

To keep our seeds at their peak, we run thorough pathology tests at trusted outside labs. When you open a Shido seed packet, you can trust it’s been nurtured, tested, and approved to give you strong, healthy plants from the very first sprout.

Types of Seeds We Offer

Hybrid Seeds (F1)

F1 hybrid seeds are the garden’s high achievers — created by crossing two specially chosen parent plants for superior vigor, uniformity, and performance. We use only traditional breeding methods to produce these powerhouse seeds.

Open-Pollinated & Heirloom Seeds

Our open-pollinated (OP) seeds naturally reproduce through wind, insects, water, or self-pollination. When grown in isolation, they produce true-to-type plants year after year.

Among our OP seeds are treasured heirloom varieties — old favorites that have been carefully passed down for generations. While OP plants can be less uniform than hybrids, we run our Open-Pollinated Project to select the most reliable, flavorful, and beautiful strains. Many are also available as certified organic seeds.

Non-GMO: What It Means and Why It Matters

GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) is created when scientists alter a plant’s DNA in a lab — often by inserting genes from completely unrelated species — to achieve certain traits, like pest resistance or herbicide tolerance. This is a far cry from natural plant breeding.

At Shido, we believe gardening should stay as close to nature as possible. All our seeds — whether hybrid, heirloom, organic, or open-pollinated — are Non-GMO. They’re bred using traditional methods that respect natural biodiversity, giving you safe, wholesome seeds that grow into plants just as nature intended.

When you plant Shido Non-GMO seeds, you’re choosing purity, sustainability, and peace of mind — along with a garden full of flavor, color, and beauty.
